Ultrasound examinations

Ultrasound Examination

Ultrasound is an excellent diagnostic tool for veterinarians when examining soft tissues and internal organs. Its advantages include speed, availability, and a painless procedure. Animals usually do not need to be sedated for an ultrasound examination. We perform ultrasound examinations at both our Välimerenkatu and Atlantinkatu clinics.

What can be examined with ultrasound in animals?

The most common areas examined with ultrasound include the abdominal cavity and its organs, various lumps and masses, the reproductive system, and the urinary tract. Ultrasound guidance can also be used to take different types of samples and, for example, drain abscesses, fluid accumulations, or cysts. In diagnosing urinary tract infections, a urine sample is taken through the abdominal wall using ultrasound guidance.

Comprehensive Abdominal Ultrasound Examination for Dogs and Cats

A comprehensive abdominal ultrasound is typically performed to investigate long-term internal medicine symptoms. During the ultrasound, the veterinarian assesses the size, shape, and structure of the internal organs. As part of the examination, the veterinarian provides a written report and reviews the findings with the owner, along with any recommended follow-up care.

Before the examination, the animal should be fasted for 10–12 hours.

You can book an appointment for a comprehensive abdominal ultrasound through our online booking system or by calling +358452734650.

Reproductive System Ultrasound

Ultrasound is almost always used when examining diseases of the reproductive system as well as for pregnancy monitoring and confirmation. The uterus, ovaries, prostate, and testes can be examined with ultrasound in both cats and dogs.

A pregnancy ultrasound is used to determine the number of fetuses in the uterus and to estimate their age. Ultrasound can also help identify pregnancy-related complications, assess the well-being of the puppies or kittens, and determine whether a caesarean section may be necessary. Based on the veterinarian’s assessment, a pregnancy X-ray may also be taken.

A uterine ultrasound is used to rule out diseases such as pyometra and other structural or hormonal abnormalities. At the same time, the ovaries are examined for any potential abnormalities.
